Summer Songs Challenge is a fun challenge to help all members, regardless of experience level from beginner to advanced, to practise completing more songs. If you take part, we will go through a 4-step guided process of starting, expanding, arranging, and completing your song in 4 weeks. If you join the challenge in both June and July, you'll have completed 2 more songs before school starts again!
"on average, those who excel in creative fields aren’t qualitatively better in their fields than their peers. What made them different is that they produced a lot more work"
Stages
- Week 1: Starting
- Week 2: Expanding
- Week 3: Arranging
- Week 4: Completing
Week 1: Starting
(1) receive a seed idea (e.g. "freedom" or "home" or "neighbourhood")
(2) decide how to express it (e.g. write a happy/sad tune, or use samples)
(3) record that first idea, and share it
(1) The Seed Idea
Choose from one of these ideas
- Twin Worlds
- Home Base
- Cyberpunk
- Omniverse
(2) Decide how to express it
Will you be writing
- A song with lyrics and vocals?
- An instrumental?
- What key?
- A soundscape?
- With beats or without beats?
- Using chopped up samples?
- Is it happy or sad?
Our goals
- Complete a song / track this month
- It's a creative exercise: aim for completion, not perfection
- You can always re-use, recycle, or remove :)
- Learning to finish songs helps us to improve our creativity - read the links at https://emlblog.blogspot.com/2019/07/finishing-songs-with-demo-in-ableton.html
Here's a reminder of 3 ways to get started
(3) Record your idea
- Share it with the group
- Keep it positive!
- Let your friends develop their own artistic ideas, don't impose yours with 'friendly advice'
- Congratulations - you got started!
- What do you want to do next?
